All of Sensei. Plus native commerce.
Masteriyo gives you everything Sensei Pro does — content drip, advanced quizzes, AI course creation, subscriptions — without the WooCommerce stack. Native payments, multi-currency, coupons, and bundles built into one plugin. Move your courses across in a single click.
Why make the move
Three reasons creators leave Sensei for Masteriyo.
Sensei is a serious WordPress LMS, built by Automattic and deeply Gutenberg-native. But its commerce runs on WooCommerce, and its modern features sit behind the Pro tier. Here is what a move to Masteriyo changes.
Native commerce, no WooCommerce stack.
Sensei runs every transaction through WooCommerce. Masteriyo bundles Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay, multi-currency, coupons, subscriptions, and bundles natively. One plugin, no commerce stack to maintain.
AI from the entry plan.
Masteriyo includes AI course outlines, lesson drafts, and quiz generation in every paid plan, starting at $99 a year. Sensei moves AI to Sensei Pro at $179 a year.
Built-in engagement, not 3rd-party.
Course Q&A per lesson, course reviews and ratings, wishlists, course announcements, and event calendars are core in Masteriyo. Sensei leaves these to 3rd-party plugins or skips them.
The comparison
Masteriyo vs Sensei, feature by feature.
Each row shows the lowest plan that includes the feature on each side.

5. Student experience
6. Reporting & admin
7. Marketing & integrations
8. Support
Prices and feature inclusions verified April 2026 against senseilms.com and masteriyo.com. Sensei Pro at $179/year bundles WooCommerce Subscriptions and WooCommerce Memberships. Sensei Agency at $360/year covers up to 20 sites or 1 Multisite. See the math section below for total cost over 3 years.
Run the numbers
What a switch saves you over 3 years.
Two ways to read this. The plugin-licence-alone comparison gives the headline. The realistic stack comparison shows what creators add to Sensei when they need affiliates, multi-currency, and native marketing tools.
Plugin licence alone, over 3 years
Masteriyo Basic, Masteriyo Pro, Sensei Pro, and Sensei Agency.
Masteriyo prices factor in year 1 introductory pricing plus 2 years at renewal.
Professional stack, over 3 years
Masteriyo Pro vs the Sensei Pro stack with 3 typical paid add-ons.
Sensei stack breakdown: Sensei Pro ($179) + AffiliateWP for affiliate program ($149) + multi-currency add-on ($99) + Zapier Pro for native marketing ($240) = $667/year × 3 = $2,001. Net savings with Masteriyo Pro: roughly $1,254 over 3 years.
Sensei stack add-ons priced from public 2026 listings. Add-on choices vary, but the principle holds: Masteriyo Pro bundles natively what Sensei moves to WooCommerce extensions or 3rd-party plugins.
Look closer
What a move to Masteriyo actually changes.
The table tells you the “what.” Here is the “why it matters.”
No more WooCommerce extension stack.
Sensei is built on top of WooCommerce. Every payment, subscription, coupon, and currency runs through WooCommerce and (often) WooCommerce extensions: WC Subscriptions, WC Memberships, a multi-currency plugin, an affiliate plugin like AffiliateWP. Masteriyo bundles all of that natively in Pro at $149/year. Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay, multi-currency, smart coupons, course bundles, subscriptions, and multi-instructor revenue sharing — one plugin, no extension stack.
One plugin instead of WooCommerce + extensions.
The typical Sensei install runs Sensei plus WooCommerce, plus WC Subscriptions, plus WC Memberships, plus a multi-currency plugin, plus an affiliate plugin. Masteriyo lives in a single codebase. Native gateways, native multi-currency, native subscriptions, native bundles, native multi-instructor revenue sharing. One plugin to update, one bill, one support surface.
AI from $99, with no extra setup.
Masteriyo includes AI course outlines, lesson drafts, and quiz generation in every plan. Sensei locks AI behind Sensei Pro at $179/year and is only available for quiz generation. If you want AI from day one without paying for the higher tier, Masteriyo is the cheaper path. One caveat: Sensei Pro also includes Tutor AI for student chat, while Masteriyo’s AI is built for creators, not learners.
Honest comparison
Sensei is a serious product. Here is where it still wins.
We respect Sensei. It is built by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, and there are specific cases where Sensei is genuinely the better fit.
If you want a real-time AI tutor for students.
Sensei Pro ships with Tutor AI, a chat tutor that answers student questions in lesson context. Masteriyo’s AI is for course creation, not student-facing chat. If on-demand tutoring is core to your offer, Sensei has the edge.
If your stack already runs on WooCommerce.
Sensei is built on top of WooCommerce, so if you already run WC for digital downloads, memberships, or subscriptions, Sensei plugs straight in. Masteriyo does not need WooCommerce, but if you are already invested, that is not a feature you need.
If you want WordPress hosting bundled in.
Sensei is sold alongside WordPress.com hosting plans through Automattic. If you do not want to think about WordPress hosting at all, getting Sensei via the WordPress.com bundle is a one-stop offer Masteriyo does not have.
Two more things worth knowing. Sensei is by Automattic, the same team behind WordPress.com and Jetpack, so the pedigree on WordPress integration is real. And the free version of Sensei carries more out of the box than most LMS free tiers. These are not the reasons most creators stay with Sensei, but they’re fair points.

“While most people gravitate toward big names like TutorLMS, Sensei, or LifterLMS, Masteriyo is a true dark horse — lesser known, but just as powerful, if not more so. If you’re looking for an LMS plugin that delivers quality without the bloat, Masteriyo is absolutely worth your attention.”
“As a non-techie teacher, I tried Sensei, LifterLMS, MasterStudy, and Tutor LMS, but I faced issues with all of them and there was no support. By Masteriyo I finally did it with the help of the easy setup and the ready websites, and I’m very happy now. This LMS has almost everything necessary for online course websites.”
“The price and value for money was a great incentive. I made use of the free plan option without all sorts of conditions first. This made it possible for me and my assistant to get a proper feel for Masteriyo. I also got prompt replies to questions that I had along the way before I decided to upgrade to the first-level Pro plan. Very easy to use and easy to implement. Lots of features, and integration also super easy.”
